Review - A Deadly Justice by Kathy Bennett

This one is dead on!

Blurb -

A brutal murder. A rash of sophisticated burglaries. A serial rapist.

Little does veteran LAPD Detective Maddie Divine and her new partner, Jade Donovan, realize that a single thread tie the crimes together. But as their investigation digs deeper and the cases begin to unravel, they threaten to expose one of Maddie’s darkest secrets and force her to confront a truth she’s tried desperately to bury.

Harley Elliot: The sleazy broken-down owner of a trendy pizzaria pays his employees well above minimum wage. What’s in it for him, and if he gets caught, will he go to jail?

The Saunders Brothers:
Blake – A cunning manipulator who knows he’s devised the perfect crime.
Logan – The hot-tempered middle brother whose careless misadventure made him a perfect target.
Jeremy – The peacekeeper for his older brothers and the calculating voice of reason in their dysfunctional trio.

Shelbie Saunders: The adopted little sister of the wild Saunder’s boys is trying to find her place in the family as she blossoms into a young woman. Trying to keep up with her new brothers is her first mistake.

Zak Murdock: The brawny sergeant of police has a troubling history with Maddie’s partner, Jade. When he’s assigned to detectives, he puts Maddie and Jade in his sights.

Walt Lamb: The hard-working bartender at Harley’s pizzaria keeps a low profile to protect his ‘side job,’ yet he misses nothing.

My Review-

Once again, Ms. Bennett has taken a magnifying glass and shown her readers the daily struggles of police life, exposed the politics of a metropolitan police force, and illuminated the dark underbelly of seemingly nice neighborhoods. Her characters are genuine. We like some of them and detest a few. We know these people. They live and work among us. It is to the author’s credit that she has taken ordinary thread and woven a rich blanket, in the folds of which she has hidden clues and surprising twists for her readers to discover.

I like the way Ms. Bennett’s mind works, even if it does make me question everything going on around me at any given time. I enjoyed the first two books in this series, but for me, this one is the best yet.

Five stars, or perhaps that should be five badges, for A Deadly Justice.

About the author -

Kathy Bennett is no stranger to murder and mayhem. She served twenty-nine years with the Los Angeles Police Department - eight as a civilian employee and twenty-one years as a sworn police officer. While most of her career was spent in a patrol car, she’s also been a Firearms Instructor at the LAPD Academy, a crime analyst in the “War Room," a Field Training Officer, a Senior Lead Officer, and worked undercover in various assignments. Kathy was honored to be named Officer of the Year in 1997.

Kathy's debut novel, A Dozen Deadly Roses, became a bestselling e-book at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. A Deadly Blessing also became a bestselling e-book at both retailers, and was selected as one of Barnes and Noble's Best Nook Book Originals for 2012. A Deadly Blessing is the first book in a series featuring LAPD Detective Maddie Divine. Law enforcement personnel laud Kathy's authentic stories of crime and suspense for 'getting it right.'

A Deadly Justice is her third book, and the second book in the LAPD Detective Maddie Divine series. Kathy is currently working on the next book in the series.
