Heather Thurmeier - Love on Landing

Today, my guest is Heather Thurmeier. I'm always in awe of other writers, especially the ones who have small children, a spouse and a house to take care of in addition to writing. Heather is one of those people, and she's sharing her wisdom with us today, as well as an excerpt from her book, LOVE ON LANDING.

Wife and Mother as Inspiration for Writing

I think everything in real life leads to some kind of inspiration in my writing, including begin a wife and mother. However, I don’t think they inspire me in the way you’re probably thinking.

It’s not the time that my husband will send me flowers for no reason that inspires a romantic scene in a book. Or the hugs and kisses I get from the kids inspiring the heartfelt love that a heroine feels for her family. Of course those things are a part of me and therefore become a tiny bit of my writing, but I wouldn’t say those moments are the inspiration for my writing.

Being a wife and a mother inspires me in the most simply way—they inspire me to just do the thing I love to the best of my ability. I know I’m not the best writer in the world, but I love being a writer and it makes me feel good to share my stories with readers. But at times, it’s hard to go through this process of writing and somehow stay motivated to keep going when times get tough. I do carry on because my husband and my kids are there beside me on the couch cheering me on to type the next scene, to send out that manuscript again because maybe the next editor will like it, or to start a new idea when I’m tired and just want to give up.

It’s my kids and my husband looking at me with pride in their eyes that inspires me to keep going and keep writing the best stories I can write.

“I said it’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.”

Roz has asked me to answer this question for this blog: It seems that marriages today are viewed at disposable - as soon as something goes wrong the marriage is thrown away rather than trying to fix the problem. So...why does your heroine go the extra mile to fix her marriage?

Hey, with the recent breakup of Heidi Clum and Seal's seven year marriage, this has become an even more relevant topic!

I understand Roz’s statement completely and I agree. My experiences have led me to the same conclusion. I guess the short answer to Roz’s question is I want my work to show that although some marriages are not perfect they are worth fighting for. I figure I can’t be the one who still believes that when you marry someone it should be ‘until death do you part’.

My person take on marriage is this: Marriage is work. Just like a job it takes time, effort and energy on a daily basis to do it right and get anything out of it. But, everybody’s job isn’t hard work and not everybody hates their job.

The Seven Year Switch is not my first book about a married couple. I like to show marriage in all its stages. The couples in them range from newlyweds to seasoned empty-nesters so that the readers can experience a wide range of love, sex, romance and drama within an established couple. Although I added a little out of the box spice to this book, I tried to keep Sonja’s reactions to finding out about what her husband is keeping her as real as I could.

When the truth finally comes out, the fact of the matter was their marriage would never be the same. The ultimatum was upon her. Was she going to make the kind of changes it took to make her marriage work or was she going to leave? There would be consequences either way. Sonja had to weigh the options to both and choose what was best for her. She chose to stay married because the bottom line was she loved her husband. In a Dana Littlejohn romance love and effort can erase a multitude of sins. J

When I created Sonja Winters I made her intelligent as well as intellectual. She is a fact-based thinker, but she does take her emotions into consideration when making important decisions. I didn’t think it fit her profile to leave Kyle after she discovered his secret. Of course she went through her thing, yelling, screaming, crying, anger, wanting to strangle him and all that—and Kyle caught hell behind it, too— but Sonja believed that he loved her. That made a difference.

People have asked me a few times who Sonja really is. Is she really me or someone I know? It’s a legitimate question since I am known to put real people in my books. Those important people on my life who have passed on have found a home in my books as secondary characters, a neighbor or someone on the phone. It is my way of keeping them ‘with us’. I either use their name and make the physical appearance totally different from the person or I change the name and keep the looks and personality, but let me go on record and say neither is the case when it comes to Sonja.

Sonja Winters does not exist off the pages of my book. She isn’t based on anyone, but I am hoping that every woman who reads her can relate to her on some level.

“Submissive men will always seek strong women because they are in need of her guidance,” Bianca said continuing her explanation.

Bianca’s voice was in an audible octave, not at all a whisper for Sonja’s benefit or to spare the feelings of the men. Sonja sipped her drink and sent a quick glance toward them. To her surprise, they stood at perfect attention, staring straight ahead showing no signs of emotion at all to what Bianca just said.

“Yes, well, I wouldn’t know that, Bianca. My husband is not a submissive man.”

“No disrespect to what you think you know, Sonja, but I beg to differ. Kyle is, in fact, a submissive man. He is what I call an alpha submissive. At work he can be very dominate and extremely aggressive when it comes to other men, but with a woman he has the desire to be humble and subservient.”

Sonja crossed her legs and turned her body toward her adversary. “Look, you must have my husband confused with another one of your men,” she sent a pertinent wave in the men’s direction, “because I know my husband. Kyle and I have been together for—“

“You have been together for the last ten years. You met while you were still in college. Kyle’s company was doing a project on your campus. He bumped into you, and you guys have been together ever since. Since then, you have graduated and have become a successful lawyer. You and Kyle were married October fourteenth, and yesterday made your seventh year anniversary. You have no children, but you want at least two, and a dog. You are leaning toward the Jack Russell breed because you want a smart dog that will not out-grow the child physically.”

Sonja’s eyes widened as she raised the cup to her mouth.

“Have I left anything out?”

Many years ago, a friend told me the story of a rent party he attended. Two roommates were short on cash and needed to raise some quick funds, so they threw a party based on the TV show, The Odd Couple. I won’t detail how the party was set up, since it’s part of my story, so you’ll just have to pick up ODD and see for yourself! Anyway, the story my friend told stuck with me over the years, and I swore one day I would write it into something. Recently, I decided to get it down while the memory remained fresh. Halfway into writing, I received an e-mail from Lori James of All Romance eBooks.

ARe was looking for stories for their Perfect Strangers imprint – stories about strangers (naturally) who experience instant love/lust. As it happened, ODD seemed to be headed in that direction, so I finished the work and submitted it. To my great pleasure, ARe contracted it alongside several others that released in February.

In the ten years Drew Bradley hosted his annual Odd Ball, people knew to expect two events: sometime toward the end of the evening Drew would lose his pants, and the two winners of the Best Oscar and Best Felix costume awards would immediately hook up afterward and live happily ever after. That many of the happy couples continued to come to the big party as their chosen television personas stood testament to their host’s impeccable matchmaking—and entertaining—skills.

Greg Hargrove personally didn’t care if either happened on his watch. After years of watching siblings primp and prepare for the biggest bash in town, he’d finally reached the requisite legal drinking age and could now attend. Though he’d never seen the television show that inspired the theme of the party, he’d gleaned enough by living vicariously through older friends—and researching YouTube clips—to know the score.

On November fourteenth, Felix Unger was asked to his leave his apartment. This request came from his wife…

There was more to the prologue, he knew, but in his excitement Greg thought himself fortunate to recall his own name, much less those of characters from a TV show that ceased airing first run episodes long before he was a “glint in the mailman’s eye,” as his brothers liked to tease.

Greg adjusted his Yankees ball cap and smoothed a hand over his three-day-old stubble. It itched like hell, but he wanted to shoot for realism even if he didn’t win the grand costume prize. Would be nice, though, since neither of his older brothers had won before, and Greg had heard Drew didn’t skimp on the goods. Last year’s couple, he’d been told, won matching gold watches.

At the front door of Drew’s McMansion of a home, a wiry, unsmiling man with a long nose looked down at Greg over his John Lennon glasses. “Your invitation?” He held out a pale, almost wrinkleless palm.

“Sure.” Greg surrendered the requisite card given him by his brother Joe, who couldn’t make it this time. Joe hadn’t kidded him when he warned about the exclusivity of the event. What the hell went on here that required protection against crashers?

The butler-bouncer, for lack of a better description, peered down at the invitation for a long moment, as though determining its authenticity. Then, curling it in his bony hand, he addressed Greg. “You may access all designated party rooms with the exception of the VIP area, and you must stay in character. How everyone behaves throughout the evening will determine the final judging for the contest.”

“Got it.” Damn, people sure took this party seriously. At least, going as slovenly Oscar rather than uptight Felix, Greg believed he could blend in easily. Acting like a slob came naturally to him anyway.

“Good.” The man startled Greg with a warm smile that completely softened the landscape of his face. “Enjoy yourself.”

Why are tough to love guys like Clint so irresistible? Maybe because they're tough, hard alpha males that think they aren't lovable. They put on a persona of not needing anyone, of not having a heart. That nothing affects them. When deep down they want what most everyone else has. Only they don't know it yet:)

In comes the heroine. Women like Sarah who are determined to break them down. See what makes them tick. Make them admit they are human after all and that they do have emotions and desires just like the next guy. Tearing the walls down almost becomes a mission. For Sarah, pushing Clint's buttons turns into a contest of who will come out on top:)

Sarah and Clint mix like oil and water. The air surrounding them is tangible. Full of attitudes, and smoldering passions that keep them struggling with their inner needs to address them. And when they do, watch out! There's no turning back once they claim one another.

I think some women are drawn to the type of guy Clint is. The dark, moody, steely eyed hero with deep secrets. Secrets they have to explore. The type of man that does something dangerous for a living, and is afraid to let himself get close to someone. He's suffered maybe. Lost people he's loved and doesn't want to go through it again. That kind of man, when he falls, he falls hard and forever. And the heroine can book on his protection and faithfulness because he has strong scruples of doing what's right.

Here's an Excerpt from THE MERCENARY WAY.

He settled behind her, positioning his legs on either side of her before pulling her back to rest against him. He knew immediately it wasn’t the smartest move he’d ever made. He had to ignore how good she felt nestled against the lower half of his body or he was going to go insane fast. Using his hands like paddles, he started steering the boat in the direction of the other side.

“Would you like me to help?” The alluring quality of her voice alerted his senses to a thousand possibilities. He steeled himself not to react, but it was damn hard to do with the boat rocking gently beneath them, causing her bottom to move against his fly.

Clenching his teeth, he tried to think of anything that would keep his thoughts off her and what she was making him feel.

Nothing came to mind but the tantalizing thought of sinking his cock inside her tight hole and screwing her until she couldn’t walk. Tomorrow wouldn’t come quick enough. It would be a miracle if they made it off the island before he tasted more than just that impudent mouth. It took every ounce of strength he had not to reach around and take hold of the mounds stretching his T-shirt out of shape, massaging them until he got her out of his system.

“Clint?”

Shit! He quickly slammed on the brakes, but there was nothing he could do to cool the heat rising between his legs. Or the friction against his zipper.

“Just relax,” he advised. “We’re almost there.” He had half a mind to get out of the boat and swim the rest of the way, damn whatever might be lurking in the depths. He’d stand a better chance of keeping his common sense that way, and it sure as hell would cool him off.

For a change, Sarah did as she was told, but he was the one suffering the consequences. She relaxed fully against him until there was no way she couldn’t know he was as hard as steel against her ass.

Now, here's a bit about Tory Richards -

I'm a fifty-something author who discovered my passion for writing and story telling at the ripe old age of thirteen. Before I received my first manual typewriter, with pencil in hand, I would jot my stories down on notebook paper. Later, after receiving that desired typewriter I spent hours in my bedroom, where my parents thought I was doing homework. Writing turned out to be a kind of therapy for me, something I didn't realize until years later.

 

I also hold down a full time day job. So basically I'm working all the time. Only writing is a hobby for me, something I do during the quiet of the evenings and on my weekends. My goals are simple and realistic. By the time I retire I'll be happy if I'm just making enough "mad money" from it to be able to travel a little, and spoil my grandchildren.

 

I'll travel any place a cruise ship will take me. I've been to: Greece, Italy, Croatia, Spain, and Alaska just to name a few places. I don't like to fly, even before I found myself on a plane on 9/11, but I will if I'm given enough legal drugs. I collect antiques and art, and I love chocolate, who doesn't? And I'm addicted to good coffee and sweet ice tea.

 

For a while life got in the way of my dreams. A few years ago I decided to get serious and haven't looked back!

Romancing the Valentine Giveaway Hop

Ahhh, Valentine's Day! The day to celebrate love is just around the corner. It's the one day we set aside each year to tell the people we love...well, that we love them.

I'm of the mind that we should be doing this every day, but hey, some people need a reminder, so in that respect, Valentine's Day is a good thing.At least they'll get around to saying those three important words once a year!

But what about those people who aren't in a romantic relationship? Some people spend Valentine's Day alone, for one reason or another. That's what my Valentine's Day Free Read is about - two single people who find each other on Valentine's Day - quite by accident.

I intended the story to be short, just a few pages, but as I got into it, it grew...and grew.... until it was two parts!  So, I'm putting up the first part today, and the second part on Feb. 12th.
